1. In the introduction, Gladwell mentions snow as a tipping point phenomenon. Explain.
2. What does the "Law of the Few" mean?
3. What does "the stickiness factor" mean and why is it important in "tipping?"
4. Gladwell uses the example of the New York City murder of Kitty Genovese, which was witnessed by 38 bystanders, to illustrate "the power of context." Explain what this means.
1. When snow starts it starts in one dramatic moment. Weather is fine, probably there is some raining or it is cold but in a moment, suddenly it starts. Then the view start changing, instead of the normal view everything became white. So he is trying to make us understand that the tipping point is that dramatic moment in an epidemic (medial or social) when everything change at once.
ReplyDelete2. "Law of the Few" is when a tiny percentage of people do the majority of the work; for example 20% of the criminals commit 80% of the crime.
3. In social epidemics the "Stickiness Factor" is when a message make an impact that you can not get out of your head and it sticks in your memory. Is important in the tipping because if you can not take it out of your head you are going to spread the message easily among your social circle so the contagious message become memorable and the changes in presentation an structuring of information in the message can make a difference in the amount of impact it makes.
4. This example explains how human beings are a lot more sensitive to their environment than they may seem. When the witnesses saw the murder none call the police because they thought that someone else will do it, so everyone was influence by their situation, and because they were a group, the responsibility for the acting was diffused and no one call.
Excellent responses. 100% correct.
DeleteIn the introduction, Gladwell mentions snow as a tipping point phenomenon. Explain?
ReplyDeletethat one some one going to play or make a snow man the niboghr will do the same and it will be spreaed along the city.
What does the "Law of the Few" mean?
That means that few ppl could expose or impact huge number of ppl. And also, the little and small cuse could effect huge number of ppl.
3. What does "the stickiness factor" mean and why is it important in "tipping?"
it is the factor that influnce the tipping to stay for long time.
it is importan in tipping becuase the tippping will take long time or may be for years.
4. Gladwell uses the example of the New York City murder of Kitty Genovese, which was witnessed by 38 bystanders, to illustrate "the power of context." Explain what this means.
To illustrat how one there are alot of ppl or thing ppl will not care of that cuz they will think either there is some one who going to respons to that or it is not imporatnt becuse it so the other person will respond.
but if there only one person this person will respond for 85%.
1. A snow man? Well, maybe I should give you some points for imagination...
Delete2. Correct.
3. This answer is unclear.
4. Close. The context causes the action, or in the case of Kitty Genovese, the lack of action. Other people were saying that nobody responded because they're uncaring New Yorkers. However, that was not the case. They didn't respond because they thought others would respond.
1. The author mentioned about the snow phenomenon in order to explain that the tiny change can have a large impact. Naturally, rain changes the state from water to snow when the temperature is about 32 F. On the other hand, the rain does not change the state if the temperature is just higher 1 or 2 degrees, which means the small change may provide the totally different result.
ReplyDelete2. “Law of the few” means the little change can have a huge impact. The author illustrated that although there were only few people who got the HIV, they can spread the disease through more and more people in the society.
These are both good answers. So you're 2 for 2.
DeleteThe only problem is that there were 4 questions to answer :D
3. "The stickiness factor" is defined as the implantation of messages in people's mind. The messages will be contagious and make a big impact through the society.
Delete4. The example showed that people were influenced by the environment without noticing. In this case, if there were only one person seeing the crime, he/she might have called the police. Sadly, because there was a group of people seeing the crime, each of them thought that the others would make a call. As a result, nobody called the police and the victim died.
Okay, so now you're 4 for 4.
Delete1. The tipping point, or some may describe it as the turning point, is the moment or the time that we make a significant turn, usually in a good way.
ReplyDelete2. “Law of the few” is defined as the rule of 80/20, or the low percentages of people do the majority of the job.
3. “Stickiness Factor” means that there’re specific ways of making contagious messages memorable.
4. “The power of context” means that key factors of changing people’s behaviors sometimes lie with very small details and humans are a lot more sensitive then they may seem.
1. This answer is non-responsive to the question :(
Delete2. Correct.
3. Correct.
4. Yes, but this answer doesn't explain the Kitty Genovese murder.
1. Tipping point phenomena is a situation that somthing reach its peak. Three characteristics of tipping are contagenous, little change make a great impact, in a hurry manner or fast. Snow represent this phenomena, since its is slowly fall but create big change.
ReplyDelete2. The law of few is
3. The stickiness factor
4. The power of context is impact of environment on human behaviors.
1. Snow represents two concepts of Tipping Point which are little changes can have big different and sudden change. Even though snow circumstance was perceived as steady, but everything had changed over night such as temperature decrease three degrees in the morning, the morning time lead to less cold than in the evening. These changes were not expect to happen, but they had happen and also occur more than feasibility. Moreover, it contrast to our expectation. The snow phenomena had the characteristics of Tipping Point.
Delete2. The "Law of the Few" mean the exceptional people who find out or cause trend of something can spread the trend through social connections and energy, enthusiasm, and personality.
3. "the stickiness factor" mean there are the specific ways to make a contagious message stick in people memory.
It is important in tipping because sticking memory can make a different impact. The great impact induce Tipping Point.
4.The power of context mean humans beings are very sensitive to environment. The 38 witnesses who were influenced by a big-city life can ignore the murder. The environment of urban life can change spirit.
#4 is partially correct, but its not fully explained.
Deletewhen something happen in dramatical moment not gradually and with small causes is called tipping poit as snow happens suddenly and cover the streets in few hours .
ReplyDeletewhen small group start to do something , they will affect others and transmit the infection and become staple .
the crimes in NY city has dropped sharply and in few time due to simple and small changes in police department and security forces and few were acting with non murder behaviour and it strated to infects others as a viruse . and the street is full again with people and children playing and feeling safe.

ReplyDelete2.i think it means that some big things that is expected to affect more but it turns to affect less. for example, Darnell MeGee had HIV and he affected 30 people out of 252 people
3. i think it means that some big things can be like a sticker.
4.i think the power of the context means that the power of any major part is stronger than the minor.in the example the major is people they were 38 of them in the crime scene but no one called the police.
:(
Delete1. the reason he mentioned snow in the introduction is to show you how the little thing can change everything at once. For example, rain becomes snow when the temperature declines only 3 degrees.
ReplyDelete2. the Law of the Few means even the small number of factors can make big differences. Economists call this 80/20 (80percent of the "work" be done by 20percent of the participants.)
3. "the stickiness factor" means specific ways of making a contagious message memorable. For example, relatively simple changes in the presentation or structuring of information make a big difference in how much of an impact it makes. the reason why the stickiness factor is important in tipping is because it has enormous implications. stickiness is a message makes an impact.
4. Power of context explains Human being are a lot more sensitive to their environment than they may seem. According to the Article in New York Times, it explains this event as the kind of environmental explanation that makes intuitive sense to us. Also, according to the psychologist named Bibb Latane, he defined this event as bystander problems. He said when people are in a group, responsibility for acting is diffused. The witensses didn't call the police NOT DESPITE THE FACT that 38 people heard Kitty's yelling, BECAUSE 38 people heard.
1. Nice, clear answer.
Delete2. Not a small number of factors, but a small number of people have the ability to "tip" the epidemic.
3. If you quote directly from the book, make sure to enclose the quotes in quotation marks and cite the page.
4. This is so but can you summarize the main point in your own words?
Thank you for your nice explanation of plagiarism.
DeleteI didn't know anything about it.
1.- The author mentioned the snow as a tipping point because is an example of a extremely change in the weather in that season, the rain is now snow and the temperature is too much cold than before, moreover it seems like is from just one moment to another, so to the human eye is happening very fast. That is the tipping point: a dramatic moment when everything can change all at once.
ReplyDelete2.- The Law of the Few says that, when a few of ordinary people, just decide to wear something or get used to behavior in a particular way, and they have an enthusiastic personality, they just spread everything to the people around them, and so, this particular fashion trend or behavior is going to change the same at other people, who are gonna keep spreading it, as a virus.
3.- The Stickiness Factor means the way how a message makes an impact in people. It is important in tipping, because if we know how to give a message that leave a memorable mark in people, that is the way in we're gonna start spread our ideas, feelings, fashion trends or behaviors, to the people around us.
4.- The Power of Context says that, human beings are a lot more sensitive to their environment that they may seem. With the example, the author illustrate that, when people are in group, responsability for acting is diffused, so that can make us actives or passives persons despite of any circumstance in where could find us.
These are wonderful responses--in your own words--which demonstrate that you truly understand the reading. 110%!
Delete1)The raun can change into snow from 34 degrees to 31 degrees. This example tells us that sometimes bid changes follow from small event, and that sometimes these changes can happen very quickly.
ReplyDelete2)It means that the minority of people can do the majority of work. Economists called it 80/20 principle.
3)"The stickness Factor" says that there are specific ways of making a contagious message memorable; there are relatively simple changes in the presentation and structuring of information that can make a big difference in how much of an impact it makes. Stickness means that a message makes an impact. It sticks in your memory.
4)"The power of context" says that human beings are a lot more sensitive to their environment than they may seem. When people are in a group, responsibility for acting is diffused. They assume that someone else will make the call, or they assume that because no one else is acting. The lesson is that no one called because 38 people heard her scream.
1. Yes, and that a very small cause can have a disproportionate effect. Just one degree less in temperature and we have snow instead of rain.
Delete2. And with epidemics, it means that a very small number of people can have a very large effect; maybe even more than 80/20; more like 2/98!
3. Make sure to answer IN YOUR OWN WORDS. If you quote directly from the book, you must place quotation marks around the quote and cite the page.
4. Same response as #3.
1. A little change of temperature make the rain turns into snow, which are two entirely different things. Meanwhile, this process took only a short time. It means even a tiny change (a tipping point) can make things go to a different direction quickly.
ReplyDelete2."The Law of the Few" means these exceptional people through their social connections and energy and enthusiasm and personality to found out about the trend and widely affect more people in the world.
3.The Stickiness Factor means that there are specific ways of making a contagious message memorable; there are relatively simple changes in the presentation and structuring of information that can make a big difference in how much of an impat it makes. Stickiness means that a message makes an impact which you cannot get it out of your head and it sticks in your memory.
4.The Power of Context means that human beings are a lot more sensitive to their environment than they may seem, it offers a way of making sense of epidemics.
1. Exactly.
Delete2. If you're quoting directly, you must place quotations around the words and cite the page.
3. Same as #2.
4. This does not explain the Kitty Genovese murder.
1.- Glawdell gave that example to illustrate how unexpected situations become expected suddenly. He uses this graphic memory to point out that tip occurs in specific dramatic moments and no matter how punctual the changes are, the effect could be important for a collective.
ReplyDelete2.- The “Law of the few” means disproportion. It implies that an elite group affects people -in a good way as in Hush Puppies case when the designers decided to reuse the vintage shoes, or in a bad way as the AIDS contagious by the “Shyteek”-. In other words, this phrase explains how social connections, energy, enthusiasm, and personality of exceptional people can encourage others to follow them.
3.- It’s important due to conduces to a response. It’s a recall message that makes people change or adapt their behavior in order to satisfy a created need. This is the reason why it’s important to build strong, effective, and memorable messages because people should easily follow and remember them.
4.- Kitty Genovee event is a very dramatic example to explain why do people in groups react diffusely. Author uses this case to show that groups make usually vague assumptions about an issue -they consider that a situation is not a problem if no one denounces, or they undertake that someone else is helping and no one does it-. In this particular case, Glawdell demonstrates that the environment plays a very important role in the witnessed group.
1. Your answer does not respond to SNOW. I'm not sure what you mean about "punctual" in this situation.
Delete2. Correct.
3. Correct.
4. Correct. His theory is that just one little change in the context can effect the result. Because 38 people witnessed the attack, nobody called the police. This was NOT because they were cold "urban" people who didn't care about other people as one writer suggested. Rather, they did not respond because their assumption was that someone else would make the call. Had the CONTEXT been different (had there been no other observers), the result would have been different (Kitty Genovese would have been saved life).
1. the author mentions the snow to explain how small changes produce big effects. when the temperature goes down and there is rain, the rain changes to snow.
ReplyDeleteYes. It just takes one tiny degree of change--from 33F to 32F--to change rain into snow.
