Brown lecture was to clarify how playing related to creative or could result in creative. He chose children’s life as an example of being a creative person with playing. First, he illuminate why children during their play use their creative ideas. Children do not have fear towards others opinions and they do not feel embarrassed of what they think of. So, they release any idea was confined into their brain. Thinking how to use the things different than what they are usually used for, opining all possibility that things can be used for, and feeling comfortable in the place and with people around that is what children have when they play and that what adult people need to be creative. Brown stated that creative can be with two kinds of playing which are building play and role play. Both of this ways is paly to learn. Building play is to build new things to play or to do other thing. Role play is to act out the others jobs or situations to understand their feeling and needs. In addition to that, creative people need to play in play mode and serious mode. And they can combine two these mode together. To sum up, creative needs 1. Normal way of thinking without affecting of others opinions or our behavior. 2. Relax and comfortable. 3. Curiosity ( to figure out everything around us ). 4. Trusting our thinking and idea. 5. Touch the feeling of others. 6. Needs (understanding what is needing). Brown did great presentation with great analyses. According in my experience in the life that I has until now, I can say everything he say is true. I remember one of my teacher who is an engineering, she said one of the years she was working in company and they try to count the amount of the sand that they need to take out and this process take a long of time sometimes maybe two days but because she has a course in programing she developed a software that help in counting that in few seconds. She being creative because she has the knowledge and she knew the needs. If she were a programmer but she did not work as an engineering she would not developed that software because she did not know that they need it. Likewise, if she were only an engineering without the knowledge of programming. Acting out others situation help creative. In fact the main secret of creative is needs ( the need is the mother of invention). However, having the idea without the courage of releasing it will kill this idea. And I am sure there are a lot of ideas that killed because of the fear of releasing them. According to that, I think most of creative people are the poor people because they need to simplify their life with available tools so they try to use one tool for many things.
You wrote: "In fact the main secret of creativity is needs (the need is the mother of invention)."
I'm thinking about this statement. Is it really so? I mean, if we look at children as our model, well, children don't need "need" to motivate their creativity. What do you think?
And if anyone else wants to comment on this idea, please do.
Brown posed that creativity is limited because of own adult nature. He said that kids are free to play, don’t have fear, feel secure, and are also open to possibilities but adults don’t . And then he introduced his topic: the importance of incorporating creativity and playful in our workplace.
The expert explains that insofar as we grow, we confine our ideas and avoid share them with anybody else by fear, and this is one reason why develop new insights it’s a hard nut to crake. To solve this issue, he proposed three steps to follow when we are part of a project: a) be playful (explore and inspired from our context), b) think with hands and build our ideas (to explain better what we want or need), and c) be part of a role play (experiment and feel). As in children’s life, creative people need time transitions to move from one mood to other to be successful.
I agree with Brown in linking creative and play as a good way to enjoy our jobs, be productive, and also develop better ideas in our professional life.
Tim Brown talks about an interesting topic in this video which is the creativity and playfulness in the workplace. He talked specifically about these "skills" in his company where many designs are developed and the positives results that have had.
I think that not in all cases, we can have the opportunity to have a role play in order to develope an idea, it's depends on our field of work; but definitely human beings have the innate skill of create new things. I agree with Brown in breaking with the paradigm of fear of other's opinions, we must take risks freely and afford to discover the potential that is in our minds. We can be adults with a sparkle of children and this, is gonna give us the freedom and the confidence to develop the important skill of creativity, not only in our jobs, also in our personal lives.
Brown's lecture introduced the connection between creativity and play in work. Adults in work, they need to trust to play and need to trust to be creavive, which are the connection. He was inspired by kids from a phenomenon that kids always don't feel fear, no matter what are they doing; however, adults always fear the judgement of their peers, and they're embarrassed about showing their ideas to people who they think are their peers. He think playfulness is important in work. It helps us get to better creative solutions, helps us do jobs better, and helps us feel better when we do them, in other words, not like most pleople's opinions, in fact, play and professional can coexist. When talking about playfulness in work, we always consider it as an unprofessional behavior. However, we ignored one thing that playfulness sometimes can stimulate creativity. Futhermore, we always can hardly trust those who are playful in work, which also prevent the development of creativities. On my opinion, the attitude of a company in play is also playing an important role in the encouragement of creativities. In other words, the leader of a company should also be the leader in play.
Brow's lecture is talking about the creativity. He gives many game experiment to play,he found that sometimes the adults might have a wild idea, but they are afraid to share it with other people. But if the same experiment on the kids, they just show what the think or what they create to whoever like it.He said that the playfulness is important,it should be in the workplace.Because playfulness helps us get better creative solutions,do our job better and feel better when we do them.He introduce three ways to help be creative,1)playful exploration,2)playful building,3)role play.
I agree with his opinion, the work is not like the study in school,we need more creativity in the work. So sometimes we need playfulness help us simulate our creativity. This kind of creativity can help us do better in our job,and we don't feel boring.
The lecture explains us how designers use exploration, building and role playing as tools to create new products and ideas. Tim Brown shows us how playfulness became helpful for developing creativity in workplaces. He said that adults care about other´s opinion and feel embarrass when take risks, in contrast children with security take risks and play when they feel comfortable in a friendly environment where they can trust on their friends and play freely creating new games and inventing innovative things. Places as Pixar and Google are trying to change their working environment from traditional offices to creative spaces where they can explore as little kids with a lot of materials; where they can build new prototypes and act out in order to understand and explore the experience of the social interactions and feelings of their clients. Brown also explain how schools damage children´s creativity when they take out different kind of concrete material as children grow older, so adults need to relearn how to play because education is excluding playing activities inside the classroom. I totally agree with Tim Brown, as we grow older we lose our imagination and the naturalness and freedom of making mistakes. We do not have to feel shame of doing new things or showing our thoughts and feelings in our daily lives and in our workplaces, we need to relearn to be as secure and free as kids are in order to create, and this does not exclude other activities that are not related with design. To exemplified, in my field we need to create new techniques and methods all the time because kids get bore and we have to innovate and invent activities in order to maintain their attention. And in other professions people need to solve problems quickly and creativity helps them to think in different paths to get an answer or to find solutions.
very nice thought view about creativity in workplace and I find it very applicaple almost in all fields specially the kindergarten and primary schools . If we could build the basics of creativity in our children in the right time when they easly absorb evrything , they will grow up with creativity thinking . they will aplly it spontaneously in their lives stages up to their work and practical lives . combining between playing and seriousness shuld be fundamental principle in any education environment or workplace , you will be shocked about how creative some people are , but they didn't have the chance to produce their creativity as a physical thing . In contrast , some people might find it just waste of time , however , I beleive about its perfect and awsome results . I can see how much my son is able to understand some issues when he enjoy the role play in the daycare . It is really surprising . It is reaaly different from just reading a story for him , it works perfectly .
Tim Brown talks the tales of creativity and play with lots of instances. He maintains 3 sections what are playful, building play, and role play. He wants to tell us that creativity is near us. When we try to do that, it appears. In the lecture, he uses many examples to provide creativity is belonging to everyone. Furthermore, children have fewer limit than adults, so they always have better creativity. I really like his research about draw pictures in circles. Though that we can see that people follow the examples by nature. We all have ability to create 15 different kinds of circles, but we copy it which we saw before. This is what I agree people invent things base on what we have. In addition, we create when we need. For example, the elevator use for help people saves the energy to walk through the stairs. Because people don’t want to climb the stairs anymore, so elevator invented.
Creative environment is beneficial in the workplace especially in the company that creative ideas are needed. Sense of trust, freedom, and comfortable help the employee to take risk to generate the new idea in the creative work. The result from the creative research shown that the adult are different from children in showing the creative thinking, since they forget to play or lean. Therfore, many companies create the creative environment in order bring the creative thinking back to their employee. The concept of playing is used as a tool to generate creative envirinment. The wokplaces that have symbol like "Toys" generate the creative feel. I agree that creative workplace is necessary to help people generate the feeling of trust, relax, and comfortable in the working hours. Creative thinking make the employee be the more productive and innotaive people.
According to Tim Brown, play and creativity are related to each other. When people are getting older, they seem to lose their creativity due to the fear and limitation. However, living in playful and relaxing environment, people can have their freedom of thought, which can help their ideas become more flourish and inventive. Moreover, it is unnecessary that people have to choose between seriousness and playfulness in order to create something, because both of them can work simultaneously. Also, exploration, building, and role play are factors that improve human creativity. It is true that play and creativity are connected to each other. Many inventors could create a number of technologies because they enjoyed working with their innovations. They believed in themselves as well as what they had done. Actually, several inventors did not even care that other people would look at them strange or crazy. As a result, they could change what had been considered impossible to be possible. And, the world could be benefited from their milestone innovations.
