Joshua Foer conclusion is memorable “remember to remember”. Society has been changing all the time and one thing that we are losing with technology is memory, as he quoted: “Our lives are the sums of our memories” so we need to start using those parts of our brains that are involved in the memory skills, train them in order to start having better social relationships and learning things easier. He says that instead of remember just the words you need to remember topics, and that is a good technique you can start with, but is even better when you create those funny stories where everything is so bizarre that you could remember facts or contents just by remembering the whole story. I just remember that when I was a child I memorized the phone numbers of all my friends because there was no technology. Cellphones or computers were no available to gather all the information and even when I was able to write the numbers down I wasn´t able to carry the note I wrote with me all the time so I learned how to memorize them visually. Learning that makes my life easier, exams were less complicated, because when I needed details I just remember where do I write them ( I have a really good visual memory) or I made some stories as Joshua said and in that way I could remember things easier by imagining them. But I can´t say the same with auditory or spatial memory I am so bad with both of them that I really need some tricks to remember that kind of stuff and he just talk about the visual tricks!!
First, he spoke about a technique that helps in memorizing handres words, numbers, pictures, or list of something by linked them with places or words that are similar to them. I tried to use this technique in memorizing vocabulary list 2 and the result first, I needed to constraint to visualize the place and creating a story with actors in my apartment that could help me to memorize the words. I reached the half of the list then my brain get tired, it was good, it helped me to memorize the words that we have in our list but the problem not the new words, the words that I already have know, for example, I remembered that we have in our list the word criticized but the new word which is ( berated ) I could not remembered. Second, long time of visualizing exhausted my brain.
I learned or I conclude from this that we need to be accustomed with this technique so that our brain work with it automaticly without thinking and I think after that our brain will has the ability to visualize in seconds, so we need to practice. Also, when we use this technique, we need to recognize the type of information that we want to memorize. Is this information new in our brain such like the vocabulary words or some thing we have known already but we need only to remember to bring it in our mind whenever we needed. the case of vocabulary we need to memorize not to remember only. So, we need to link the words not with the places but with others words that are similar to them such like when the presenter linked the cockis manster with the name of his friend, and this need practice to be automaticly in our brain.
Joshua's speech is about visual memory. There are some extraordinary people who can memorize extremely complicate pictures or words. However, the reason they can do this unusual thing is not because they are more intelligent than others, because they are drawing some images with their mind's eyes when they try to memorize it. In other words, unlike the people who try to use their brain to memorize, by using their imagination, they can achieve to remember what they want to memorize. This lecture is really interesting for me because I saw one guy who had extraordinary memorizing ability on TV when I was in Korea and I was shocked.. For me, I use my imagination when I read books and it helps me to remember the book's content (but not all of them.) I still cannot believe this is true story... but I think memorizing visually really helps remember things such as our vocabulary powerpoint, that really helps me memorize words with pictures. But, there is one thing I wonder that how long this great ability to memorize can last. It seems so different with the memories that people usually can remember. Like their childhood, or what they did in specific time. People usually think of the past with visual images...I sometimes recall the past when I smell the odor of that time… Anyways, this looks so cool.. I will train my capacity to memorize complicated things. That way, I believe many things will be easier.
First of all I want to express that I totally agree with the speech that Joshua Foer gave. It is very common to think that the people who used to go to this type of tournaments, have some special gift or simply they just live training themselves for these moments, and we have forgotten that all the human beings have brains, from what all, have the aptitude to memorize and to learn any topic or thing that we wish.
I think Foer had two important ideas inside his speech. The first one, to make us know or remember, that with the sufficient concentration, we can achieve the continued learning. The second one, so important as the first one, which the memory begins to construct itself with the memories of our own existence.
In these times in which we allow many ourselves to take for the unstoppable advance of the technology, perhaps we have forgotten so much to paying attention to the important thing, as dedicating a few minutes of our time to remember.
It called my attention very much, the exercise that Foer did during a year before being present at the contest, dedicating 15 or 20 minutes of the day to remember simply something. In our case, that we are trying to learn another language as if it was our mother tongue, I think that in addition to the concentration, one of the keys of success is the practice, exercising the mind and the speech, so much, that we manage to dominate the language with naturalness. I think that Foer with this exercise began to mark a difference in his mind, and it turned it into a person with incredible memory .. an exercise that definitively I am going to begin to practice.
I can summarize this talk by saying that the people who are able to memorize some stuff , which we find it impossible , such as hundred of names , thousand digits of numbers or arrangement of too many table cards , are not necessarily smarter than the others or having special talent . Actually they have trained memory and they are using the correct sections and parts of their brain . Memory is learned and everyone can train his memory. Absolutely , it is easier to remember things when we pay attention and when we are deeply engaged and when the thing makes sense to us . As he said , when we remember to remember , I found this talk very accurate becase i am convinced that we can always do more and we have alot of hiden capacities and talents as a human being . I agree that advanced technology has its bad effect on our communications which adversly affects our memories because we are not attentioned to the circumstance any more .
Joshua Foer pointed out that almost all people have the same structure of brain. Nevertheless, what makes their power of memory different depends on how they train their brains. The speaker convinced that visualization is necessary in order to improve memory. The more people can create weird images in their brains, the better they can memorize those ideas. Also, if people exercise their brain by practicing memorizing, they can remember things more easily. From my perspective, students need to have a good memory in order to be successful in learning language. After listening to Foer’s lecture, although his main point was about the visualization, I noticed that he needed to get rid of any distraction while practicing memorizing. Therefore, not only is visualization important to strengthen memory, but also concentration. If students want to maximize their potential in learning languages or any other subject, they should be concentrated and be creative enough while studying. For example, when I studied TOEFL and GRE vocabulary, I preferred to study alone and made a list of synonyms on paper. With this way, I could remember hundreds of vocabulary more comfortably by imagining what I had written on the paper.
joshua wants to deliver a message to the people.the message is that people can do things that they can't imagine. one of the things is memorizing and actually its the lecture topic. joshua said that people think that the person who can memorize numbers and patterns are smarter than them. however, the studies shows that they aren't. they use imagination to help them memorize all of these things. the problem appeared when the technology came out because the people don't use their brain to memorize they use instead the cell phones.as a result, the skill of memorizing disappear because they dont use it. the solution is to practice and have the faith that you can memorize. i think we need this skill as language learners because we will need to memorize vocabulary. when i have a vocabulary test i write all of the words and their definitions in a piece of paper and i also put some keyword for each word. this help me to remember the definition of the word.
Memory can be trained is the great point I have learn from the speaker. The techniques he used are simple and just pay attention to learn to memory. By imaging, visualing, relating memory with something easy to memory can help the brain to memory. Training to memory for him is a funny activity, since he need to get better and better. It's like a game! Learning from his experience encourage me to use his technique in memorizing vocaburary and grammar. I have to 1)relate tremendous vocabuaries to something meaningful or significant to me or related to them, 2) set the time to practice and keep practicing, 3)figure out what a funny activity it should be. I think his method should work out, since I can improve my memory from the vocaburary's PW!. Thanks to all of 6A students for the great slides.
Joshua's speech is talking about visual memory. He said that many guys in the memory championship can memorize hundreds of random numbers looking at them just once, they can memorize the names of dozens of strangers, because they have trained themselves to perform these utterly miraculous feats of memory, they use a set of ancient techniques. He also tell about us about his memory journey. he said that not only training his memory, but also investigating it.The difference between the brains of the memory champion and the brain of the normal people is that the memory champion were lighting up different parts of the brain than everyone else.He said the idea behind the memory palace is to create imagined edifice in your minds eye and populate it with images that the things you want to remember.I think it's a good ways to memorize. In my opinion, there are actually existing many brilliant and talant people inthe world, they can memorize many kind of things in a short time. it's incredible for us.I don't think that normal people can do the same thing as them. But I believe that we can train our brains to improve our memory. For me,I have two ways to memorize. The first one is that I'm always with the help of material objects to memorize. The second one is the appropriate time, for example,I always memorize vocabulary in the morning and night. I think it's the good time for me to memorize things.
Joshua Foer mainly mentioned that a part of our lives are memory what we wanted to memory. He gave several examples. One of them named Add was one of the best memories in England who had great memory ability. However, when Joshua asked Add weather he had a perfect memory, Add answered he did not. On the other hand, others one who had worst memory but he didn’t deem he had any problem in it. According to some researches, scientists didn’t find these guys who had the best memory in the world had some special tangent helping them remember better. In later, he found that people just remember what they want In my opinion, I consider that there are some special people really great at remember things. Although Joshua thought no one’s brain is especially, I still believe in there are special gens which assist them do a better job in memory system. For instance, there are two lists of very academic vocabulary and two students who have exactly very similar vocabulary background. After 5 minutes, they may not able to remember the same number things, so this is the difference. Therefore, I have faith in that some people have good memory as a gift when they born, but 99% humans are the same.
In this video, Joshua was pointed to the way people learn to memorize the things. He also pointed that everyone can practice their memory. As he gave an example of people who practice their memories to improve the memories. He did mention about the way to practice the memory, since it has been used to more than 2,000 years, so in this way, people can improve their memories. At the end he talked about the way to practice memories, like in the morning try to remember something. The other way to practice is that try to relate the thing we want to memorize. In this way, when we think about memories, it will help in recognizing the work. After this lecture, I felt that everyone has own abiliti ti odo many things, so I am glad to know that all these technique help people to memorize many stuffs. I think this lecture is really useful for the people who need to practice there memory, especially for the student who has memory problem (like me) so than he/she will be able to improve his/her memory.
Joshua Foer's speech is talking about feats of memory anyone can do. His opinion is that great memories are learned by paying attention and deeply engaged, we are able to have great memories through training ourselves. Firstly, he made everyone image a picture like a pack of overweight nudists on bicycles, a Cookie Monster, Britney Spears, "The Wizard of Oz" and so on. Secondly, he introduced Ed who was a champion of a contest about memory in America. Joshua learned something about how those who have great memories remember so many things which the rest of us can hardly remember from Ed. After that he talked a experience from himself which was that after a year of training, he won that cotest. He used his own experience to improve his opinion like that those great memories are not innate talent, in fact, anyone of us can achieve it through training, paying attention and deeply engaged. However, the reason why the rest of us don't have this kind of great memories it was because we are using more and more technologies which help us to remember. In other words, it was those technologies obstructed our abilities in memory, there is no need for us to memory things by using such as laptop, smart phones. Finally, he recommended us to try to put down those technologies and began to use our brains to remember. On my opinion, they do have some people who have this kind of talent in memory. They can use different parts of their brains to remember things easily, however it doesn't mean that the rest of us who don't have these innate talent can not make our brains work like theirs. We still have opportunities by training. We shouldn't over-rely on technologies which will make us miss a lot of amazing things in our lives.
Of all the memorizing tactics that he mentioned, I've all read them in the book "Jerome becomes a Genius" by Eran Katz - the guy who set a Guinness World Record for memorizing a number consisting 500 numbers after hearing it only once. In my opinion, the fundamental of every trick to remember longer is to relate the things with other familiar things, involve as much senses as possible, and use the imagination.
Before I hear this lecture, I used to think that gifted memories just belonged special people. Now I know that the average people simply don’t know how to develop this innate skill that everyone have.
I agree with the theory that technological context where we grown up made us life easy, but also it made us lost important events of our own history. A video clip or a picture are ways to keep in mind special moments, but these episodes are lost if we don’t put attention when they occurred. Sureness of have them available for later makes us pass through them with no enjoyment.
As language learners, the particular tip about association is very important. The idea to link words with experiences help us to be ongoing updated, and this is a very important tool especially when we are trying to increase our vocabulary. I know most of felt identified with this.
