The main idea of the lecture Barry Schwartz presented is the controversy about how true is the principle of freedom for the common contemporary people. He tried the audience reflected on the consequences or effects of choice in life. The lecturer supported his ideas in two basic aspects: a) the paralyze that produces to make decisions because it’s hard to choose an option from among several. And b) less satisfaction considering that people use to be disappointed because their expectations are so high and maybe they could be better satisfied if they will have chosen different.
In my opinion, this is a very ambitious humanity question, for most of us haven’t ever consider that freedom by itself could make us unhappiest. However, seeing by Schwartz’s point of view it sounds logic, and I think women are a good example. For years, we struggled against our parents to be independents, but when we grow up we desire to be girls again. The conflict emerges when we face our adulthood’s reality: work, house, kids, husband, bills, commutes, taxes, and a large etc. All of those are desired choices in life but much bigger and highly demanding that we ever imagined.
Maybe this illustration is not the best to understand the lecture at all, but it’s my way to show you that freedom has pros and cons, and sometimes we just need to carry on with both to life our live.
I love the last phrase "Everybody needs a fish bowl" and I agree with him. When you have been working with kids, you can notice that when you give them a lot of options to choose from, they seem lost. Because they need a structure in order to act, they need someone to restrain all the feelings and emotions to help them focus on the reality of the task. For example, when you are trying to make little kids talk, you need to maintain monotonous routines and sentences so they can predict what is coming next, and they could start labeling words and then organize sentences. In adult life, Barry Schwartz is also right. We are so worried for the selections we took or did not take or with the choices we will or will not take, that we lose the moment without enjoying it. So we need to live the moment!! Other point that he mentioned in order to achieve more simplicity and be delighted with common things was to low expectations, when you start lowing them, things seems more easy going and you can live pleasuring experiences without been preoccupied of something that you could not have now and you feel happier with things you have and achieve gaining satisfaction and a happy life. That is why whenever I go shopping I select the simpler product.
the speaker claimed that the huge diversity of choices leads to difficulty in decision making by providing some examples and discussed the reasons to illustrates his argument. He states that there are two effects of huge number of choices and these are a lot of choices reduce the paralyzed and cause the less satisfy with the choice.
I agree that huge numbers of choices may make difficulty in decision. the speaker talked that when we value things we depends on what we compare to. I think a lot of choices means a lot of comparing which going to take long time in order to read or to get more information about each one's features and which one is better. And this relay consuming for time and disappointed. For example, when we want to buy a cell phone we have a lot of companies and each company has more than one or two choices and before we take the decision the company realise new product to mark.
Also, the diversity of choosing could distracted our thought, are we going to do this, this, or this or we are going to focus on what are doing right now and this results in exhausting our brain and causes bad performance.
In addition to that, I think alot of choices, means that there are some choices which are not important and only westing for money while there are some people die because of famine.
I agree that diversity of choices has these disadvantage but I disagree with the speaker that we need few choices what we need relay is to control our self and the way that we thike of and why we are going to choose. The idea is not to choose the best thing in the world but to choose the best thing that meet our need this will reduce the choices. for instance, iPhone in USA could be very useful but in Saudi Arabia does not make any sense most of its applications do not work in Saudi Arabia so may be it will not meet our need in Saudi Arabia even if it considered as the best cell phone.
The main idea of the lecture that is given by Barry Schwartz was illustrating his studies in giving more choices to the people. according to the studies,if we give people more choices in a product or anything else at first they will feel happy because they have different things that they can choose from. But, when they take the product that they chose, they will feel less satisfied. the reason of this is that they will think that if they chose one of the other products it would be better for them.in the other hand,if they make fewer choices the people will be both happy and satisfied with what they bought. I agree with Barry Schwartz because i think his studies result is logical and you can see it in our daily life. For example, once i went to buy a gaming mouse.the problem there were too many brand and i didn't know what to buy.then i chose one ,but after nearly two days i thought that if i bought the other one it would be better.if their was only one choice i will be happy and more satisfied with the product.
This lecture is talking about the choice.First, Barry says that most people think that the more choice people have, the more freedom they have. Then he says that all of choice has two negative effects on people. The first effect is that it produces paralysis, there are many options to choose from,it's difficult to choose for people.second effect is people is less satisfied with the result of the choice.there are severl reasons.first reason is that you always think your choice that you have did is not as good as the choice that you image.second is that the more choice you have ,the more attractions you have.third reason is that the expectation is hiigh. I agree with Barrry Schwartz's opinion.there are many choices in our life.we should make decision all the time. if we are not satisfied the rusult that we choose,it's not other people's fault,it's our fault.because we have many choices that can be chosen,we should have chosen the satisfied choice, but we didn't.so it's our responsibility.
The main point of the lecture is that there is paradox when people make decision. Maximizing choices is considered as a basic element in order to maximize citizen's welfare. These days, as a lot of choices have been appeared to satisfy people's need, life is becoming a matter of choice, which is good. According to the lecturer, however, this event has two negative effects: 1)There are so many difficult choices, and 2)Even if people manage with choice, they keep ending up with dissatisfaction (They regret even though it was a good decision,) because their expectation is so high. The professor supported the latter point by stating "Opportunity cost." Whenever people choose one and reject another, the rejected one make them feel less satisfied. To sum up, the choice is becoming wider in order to maximize people's satisfaction of needs but that numerous choices lead people to dissatisfaction even though there choice is a good one.
In my opinion, I agree with him. Because of the fast development of technology or various values of people, products that people want are getting more complicated and diverse. Then, we often face with the problems that what we have to choose among various chances. Also, most people tend to find new things regarding to their interests on their needs. It's because they cannot satisfy with what they have compared to more developed, sophisticated, or scientifically proved supplies.
Actually, with my personal experience, I am satisfied with what I have no matter how developed they are. Simply because I don't care but I do agree with him in general way.
In this video the speaker is trying to convince the audience about new theory talking about relationship between level of human freedom and the number of choices in life . He thinks when the number of choices is large people get so confused about them and the result is less happiness even if they are satisfied with the wide range of choices . Actually he could convince me about his idea , and I immediatly remembered my son in the toy store . seriously , If I open the choices for him and tell him that he could choose any toy , he just stands right there and thinks for a while then he says " I want them all " . That's because he is afraid of mistaking choosing the best toy among all that many toys . But , if I ask him to choose between just two toys " you have to choose this one or this one " he can easly points out to the toy that he thinks is better . So yah , I think he is right , choosing among limited numbers of things is much easier even with less satisfaction . Any way , i beleive that humanbeing satisfaction couldn't be reached . Humanbeing will keep looking for the best and they will never ever reach it , they are always asking for more and more .
The orator pointed out two main negative sides of having too many choices. First, having too many choices can paralyze people due to the difficulty of making a decision. For example, the more mutual funds are offered, the fewer employees will make a decision. Second, having too many choices lessens people’s satisfaction. With a number of options, people can easily feel regret if the choice they have chosen is not perfect. Also, opportunity cost, which means when people choose one option, they will lose others at the same moment, is another issue that causes people become less satisfied. Moreover, since the number of choices is higher, the expectation of consumers skyrockets too. Finally, people need to be responsible for their own decision, which means that it is their false if they make the wrong decision.
According to the speaker, I agree that making a good decision is not an easy task to do, and it is even more difficult if there are an enormous number of choices. With a variety of options, it is almost impossible to pick the best choice at the first time. As a result, this will lead to some mental problems such as, regret, dissatisfaction and disappointment. On the other hand, in order to comfort people when making a decision, options should be controlled in the appropriate number. Furthermore, consumers themselves should be aware that there is nothing perfect in this world and they should not be remorseful in cases the result is different from what they have expected.
The main idea of the lecture is that various choices of our molten lives don’t means well. He explains it in many sections such as cell phone, health care, and identify. He also accepts that making dictions is hard for us now. In my own opinion, I agree his idea. I really think mute-choice now is totally interrupting me a lot. Every day I have to do too many choices when you wake up. What kind of clothes to wear? What to eat? Which way to go? There are so many things to decide. However, we have to do that what can’t be chosen by ourselves. It is life what is never easy. Therefore, I just do what I can do and don’t feel regret forever.
The main idea from Barry is when we are among number of choices that we have in our lives, we are the only one who responsible to make the decision and choose the best one for ourselves. He also point that when number of choices is increasing, the expectation also increase. So when we look around us today, everything comes with options to be selected. That is the reason of one of the cartoons that he showed that people are thinking of the time when the choices were limit and to select the best one was easy. As the example of he went to replace new jeans, he pointed to number of options which available at the store. Though he found the good one but it is not the best as he was expected when he came to buy it. With Barry's point of view, I really agree with him. Nowadays, people are filled with number of choices which can be selected. But due to the expectation is going higher and higher, so we feel that whatever we chose just the good and suit to ourselves, not the best one that we can get.
The speaker make an argument about the effect of having too many "CHOICES" in the industrial western society. It has both positive and negative effect on modern's life. Having more choices increase freedom, on the other hand its increase epectation. The more expectation people have, the more disappoinment they are!. As a result, he proposed that the secret of happiness is low expectation. I agree with his argument. You are the person who have to responsible to your decision whether it made you happy or not.His concept can be applied to diverse sectors and from individual daily life to policy maker. Affluent choices an information in modern society increase freedom to choose, so people have to learn to choose wisely as a consumer in industrial society. His concrete explanation of increasing suicide and disappoint from high expectation is very interesting. If people learn what a complicate it is in each decisions, they will not either blame themself too much or commit suicide. So, Paradox of choice will be in my first list when I go to the book store in the next time. Going to the book store is the way to SEE your choices instead of FEEL it from the websites. Thanks to teacher Holly for introducing the great video.
Barry Schartz’s main argument is that the official dogma of Western industrial societies in maximum choice is fault. In most Western society, the usual way to maximize welfare of the people or the customers is to maximize choice. However, in Barry’s lecture, he took a firm stand on the conception that maximizing choice only causes dissatisfaction. To support his statement, Barry introduced two disadvantages of having too much choices, which is causing paralysis and causing regret.
In my opinion, the lecturer’s statement may sound logical but it does have flaws. I believe that having too much choices only cause paralysis or regret if the things a person has to choose are in one specific catalog. For example, the Apple Inc., which company releases only one phone model per year, is “head and shoulder above phone rivals in customer satisfaction survey” - according David VanAmburg, director of the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) in 2012. In 2010, a few years after Apple released the original iPhone, they introduced the first generation of iPad - a tablet device which has many features like iPhone but a bigger screen and except for calling or sending SMSs. After the release of the iPad, Apple’s customers are still satisfied with the purchase they made in either device, in fact, Apple’s satisfaction survey point increases every year (according to ACSI) and many of the customers own both devices. The most reasonable answer for this perhaps iPad and iPhone belong to different catalog; the iPhone belongs to the smartphone catalog and the iPad belongs to the tablet catalog.
The principal idea of the dialogue of Schwartz, explains the reasons for which a big number of options between which to choose, in the modern world, make people less happy, less satisfied and worried about each decision that have taken or not.
I agree partly with the author, that life is one every day of decisions to make, and often this fills us with worry, stress, and it is true that it even paralyzes us.
But also it is true that we like or not, the world is in constant development, and taking decisions between good, bad and better things, is a part of ours, from what I think that as human capable beings we must learn to handle certain emotions linked to the decision making, so that this way, the fact that every time we have more alternatives for everything, it turns into a better and more comfortable life.
It's believed that the way to maximize freedom is to maximize choice, which means the more choice people have, the more freedom they have, and the more freedom they have, the more welfare they have. However psychologist Barry Schwartz think it's not the truth. On his opinion, people don't have freedom accurately with so many options are available. Conversely, people will have paralysis and will decrease their satisfaction. There are 2 negative effects on people when they have more options. First of all, with so many options to choose from, it will be very difficult to choose at all. Secondly, if we manage to overcome the paralysis and make a choice, we end up less satisfied with the result of the choice than we would be if we had fewer options to choose from. As far as I'm concerned, I do have a serious selective disorder, even just two options also will make me hesitate. I remember the first day that the new iPad was available, I've been considering about which colour to buy on the whole way to the store, despit the iPad just has 2 different colour. At last, I used the coin to make a decision for me. So I deeply agree with Barry Schwartz's opinion and I do really hope that the iPhone will only available on white and black forever.
