Listening Work #2 (due Monday, 10/1)

http://www.ted.com/talks/ken_robinson_says_schools_kill_creativity.html

Listen to the talk on education and creativity. I want you to do exactly what you did last week--tell me what the main idea is and then respond and share your opinions about what he says.

  1. Ken Robinson´s talk of school as an impediment for creativity make me think about all those teachers that try to make us focus on one way to reach goals instead of making us think about what other paths we have to follow in order to reach those goals, that is the reality of creativity.
Robinson idea about creativity as important as literacy is remarkable, international education systems are always interested in subjects such as mathematics, humanities and last (and here we can apply less important) arts. Just for you to know, in Mexican schools we do not have arts as part of the educational program, so children who want to be painters, singers, dancers or artists could not achieve their goals because they do not even have the opportunity to prove their ability in those fields, and that is really sad. There are a lot of them that have diagnostics of learning disabilities as Sir Ken said and when they are canalize to learning specialists, we start figuring out that they are really intelligent children but they have a different kind of intelligence and when therapists show them how to learn by different ways (if they are dancers you can show them to learn the numbers dancing or moving from one number to the other) they start improving in school´s contents.
As he said children born with a creative mind but as the time pass by, children start losing it because of the instruction they are receiving at home and school, adults do not let them been wrong, and if they are not prepare for wrongness they lose their capacity to create. So we need to start letting them be, letting them think and letting us surprise about all the new and rich ideas they could afford by creativity.

    1. What a wonderful response you've written here, Ileana. Are you familiar with Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences? It sounds like you are. I have a lot to say on this topic.

  2. Ken Robinson mentioned that the creativity of children is taken away by educational system. People should value the creativity as the same level as other main subjects, such as literacy. Also, children should not be scared of making a mistake; otherwise, they will never come up with an original idea.
Nowadays, kids who act or think differently from others can be looked like abnormal children or, even worse, patients with mental illness, which is not always true. In fact, they may have special talents.
Robinson indicated the weakness of the educational system that students are encouraged to choose a subject based on what they will be instead of what they like. Their intelligence is measured only by academic abilities, which can sometimes discourage students that they do not have talent as well as creativity. Finally, Robinson defined the definition of “intelligence” as diversity, dynamic, and distinctness.
I agree with the speaker that education sometimes can destroy student’s creativity. However, it is not true for every case. I have still believed that the major part of creativity depends mostly on students themselves. For example, even though students are likely to choose a subject based on their jobs in the future, it does not mean that their creativity is limited by educational system. Students, on the other hand, can choose an elective subject for their special interest at school and they can also gain more knowledge from other places, such as the internet and library. Therefore, with students’ devotion and eagerness to learn, their creativity cannot be eradicated.

    1. This is a very thoughtful response. You make a good point about creativity not having to be limited by the educational system. Unfortunately, young kids are generally rewarded for their performance in school and performance in school is related to the typical academic subjects. There just might not be much time for a child to pursue those "creative" subjects that fall outside their academic schedule. Their "devotion and eagerness to learn" would be like flowers breaking through the concrete sidewalk.

  3. First of all, I must confess that I lost lots of information because of the speed and the strong British accent of the lecturer. Also, I couldn’t laugh with his jokes because I misunderstood some idiomatic and social cues. However, I caught the main idea and some supporting details of the speech. Robinson tried to make people reflect on the actual educational system and how the educational structure keeps the creativity away from the classrooms.

From centuries up to now, people haven’t been prepared to commit mistakes (which, according with Robinson, is part of the creativity process). For example, people have not exposed to make something wrong and figure out how to fix it because this is not the way how successful companies or leaders do it.

For the expert, creativity -seen such as any expression of art- must be consider as important as each other subject in the academic field, and consequently as important part of our daily environment.

    3. I consider creativity is very important in life in general because it makes people happy while develop certain abilities.

For me, a very good eduactional system specially for kids must integrate arts in its clases because it lets children discover which is their field, where they are strong in, and which is their comfortable zone. Also, when children grow up, keeping activities as music, paintting, dancing, amongothers, is such a warranty of estability and good social relationhsip, for they help people to communicate. Artistic developing also contributes with the built of a critical thinking, so people can be more tolerant, accesible and successful.

  4. the speaker states that creative is very important but most of education methods preper us for work without bying attantion to the creative side.
He think that being creative will change the future and if we helpe the chaildren to be creative they will see the futer.

In viow of my point creative thinking is very importatn because it bring out new ideas to our world and these ideas usually help in imporvment and enhance our life and make it more easier.
And I agree with him that system of education created to preper us for work or job only do the work that they asked from us to do and we have to do exactly what they asked us to do without thinking to improve this work or bring new idea or project to the life.
He think that must of the childeren have talent that system of education has kiled. I agree with him but we cannot through all the blam on the system of education but even the perents and the people around the children or the person play an importatn role to develop or bring this talent out to the world.
perents can set with thier children and try to detect thier talent or what they like to do by trying each science and hoppy with them but not as they are educat them, they have to do that as they are playing or doing some thing fun with them. such as lets creat our own small car that no create like it befor.

  5. The speaker, Sir Ken Robinson, raised the issue about the influence of current educational system on human creativity. The purposes of education in the recent world still based on as they were in the past, industrialism era. Education emphasized on academic abilities in order to serve the high degree jobs. Education which create intellent people was not enough to create creative people, since creativity came from interaction of different things. In the creative view, successful was not only being the professors in university but also success in what you be. The ballet girl was the good example.
I gree that creativity is as important as ability is. The two components are necessary and function like human's brain, left and right brain. Education should balance between the two characters. The next generations should have both intellegent and creative, but the problems is how to do create this new educational system.

  6. Sir Ken Robinson had point to some interesting fact in education system. Sometimes, people just want to study to be success whether on their own interest or not. But when we think about the point of interest, many people will treat them as the minor for their lives. Sir Ken gave example of some students in which the school system treat them as the learning disable, but when those kids had chances to show their abilities and interest, they had gone far from the point of education for job. This is really interest myself in the sense of study, sometimes people work hard and do more and more things to achieve the higher level of education, but then they forget their interest and personal goal. As Sir Ken pointed out that, parents treat those gifts as hobbies but, in fact, those hobbies go beyond to succeed in one's life. This is the most important of purpose of education, to let a person reached his\her own goal with intelligent and work with creative.

  7. The main idea of the Robinson's speech is to create conscience about the absence of recognition or attention to the creative skills of people these days, as it gives to the analytical or numerical part.

According to Robinson, the system of current education, is an important part of the lack of this development, since it has devoted itself to build an educational system based on academic recognition, stopping on the outside, the humanistic talent that we all possess. The parents in the childhood, also used to prevent the creative development in order to follow the system education.

I think that it is important and I agree with the author, in promoting from early education, the development both of the intellect and of the artistic skills in children and young people, so much in schools as the parents in their houses.

This will bring undoubtedly, significant advance inside the society, since it will encourage the birth of new talents, like the important personages who have marked our history.

  8. Sir Ken Robinson’s argument is that schools kill creativity, in other words, he insists that we’re being educated out of creativity. He explains that hierarchy-ness and industriousness of the education system have lead to this alarming consequence. At the end, Robinson concludes that we should fundamentally change our educational system in order to utilize human’s capacity and to serve our future.
In general, I share Sir Robinson’s concern about the need to fundamentally rethink education in the way that can make use of human’s capacity. However, I would dispute with the idea that all schools are killing creativity. In my perspective, not all of the schools focus on teaching academic abilities, in fact, there are many of them focusing on teaching other abilities such as art, dance or drama. However, there’re enormous number of standardized schools just focusing on academic subjects. And that’s is the problem we are facing. In addition, children’s loss of being creative as they grow up is not mainly because of schools. In my belief, it depends on many factors such as the teachers or their environment.

  9. Robinson talks about the education and the creativity. He says that creativity now is important in education, he thinks that we should treat it as the same status.Picasso said:"All children are born artists." Robinson says that the problem is to remain artist as we grow up.He thinks we don't grow into creativity, we grow out of it.He gives us an example,we have mathmetic class every day, but we don't have dance class every day. He thinks dance is rather important. The reason for this phenomenon is that the most useful subject for work are at the top.second is academic ability. He says that digrees aren't worth anything.there are three things about intelligence, one is diverse.secondly, intelligence is dynamic, the third thing is distinct.
I agree with him that the school kill the creativity. In my opinion, many students studied to get the digrees.we may study the major that we don't like, but we want to get good job.this is the teacher tell us in our high school.I think that the school kill our creativity, for example, when I studied in my country, all questions for the subjects have the set answer, even Chinese subjects,it's our native language. I think different have different thoughts, so their answers should be different, they shouldn't have the exact answer for every question. It's not like mathmatic which has the exact answer for every question. So we should have our own thoughts.

  10. I listened to this talk and i find it outstanding fact and not just a thought . I agree with the speaker totally 100% . Creativity must has attention equally with the literacy . Many creations made millions for their owners when had been discoverd , as many creations had been buried because they grew in wrong unsupported environment . I really agree also about being public school focus on the scientific material such as math as basics and slight other materials that show the capacity of children and their attitudes .
To be honest , how many material we studied in the school with high concentration and we did not and will not use it in one day ?!!!
As he said , the education system should be fixed to face the children capacity of creativity and change many fundamental principles to let each single child discover his path and his field of creativity . We should stop growing up our children out side their dreams , because their dreams could change the world one day .
    Thank u .

  11. In this presentation, Mr. Ken Robinson's point of view is that schools kill creativity. He said that all kids have tremendous talents but teachers squander them in a pretty ruthless way. Meanwhile, he thinks that creativity now is as important in education as literacy, and those who work in education should treat it with the same status. Usually, teachers won't teach children dance like the way they teach mathematics. It is because the public education system focus on the students' academic abilities, the most useful subjects for work are at the top. Therefore, children's creativity were killed by the education system. However, it is the creativity take us into the future that we cannot grasp, so the education system should pay more attention to the creativity.
On my opinion, I'm pretty agree with Mr. Ken Robinson's point of view. I think the target of education shouldn't just for training academic ability. Since the world need all kinds of talented person who can work in different fields, children should be encouraged in training different specialties. Education doesn't mean to manufacture "academatic mechines", it suppose to help students to find out which field they are good at, at the same time helping them to develop their creativity. In a word, we should treat creativity with the same status as literacy.

  12. What Ken Robinson talks about in this lecture is that education system in school is dislodging children's creativity. He said most children lost their capacity to creative thought as they grow up. I agree with this statement because I think children learn biased opinions or things that are considered right from adults as they grow up. This happens not only from the school but also from family. Also, as Sir Ken said, escaping from the right things (being wrong) can help children to expand their ability to think creatively. Moreover, he said that intelligence is diverse, dynamic, and distinct but the partial education system towards general academic ability in school makes children lose their opportunity of digging out their talent in particular fields.
I totally agree with his argument because his opinion is exactly what I thought when I was in Korea. In Korea, I don't even have any time to think 'why?' I have to memorize all of the mathematic formula, analysis of literature work, what year the historical event happened, etc and I have thought in negative aspects about this situation in Korea. I've wanted to think why, how and have wanted to enjoy what I am learning but I couldn't. I had to study the most useful subject to work. In other words, to quote what Robin said in the lecture, education system in Korea emphasizes "Don't do music, you are not going to be a musician. Don't do art, you are not going to be an artist." So I didn’t learn music and art since second grade in high school. Most of the high school students actually called school a preparatory school because most high school's first goal is to make students get into prestige schools as many as they can. To conclude, I agree with his opinion.

  13. Ken Robinson talked about the school education what made students lost their talent creativity. As he said, creativity was important as education and these two things should have the same states. The education system had been change to focus on one way goal preparing to university. He disagreed and mentioned that afraid of wrong deprive creativity.
In my opinion, I’m totally agree him. The education now really reduces our creativity. For example, we spend too much time on maths; as a result, there is a very little time for us to practice dancing, singing, drawing and so on. We just pay attention to the tests and exams and forget to improve our personal ability. Therefore, the education system should be changed. It would be more better if there is a little of extra time to do something creativity.

  14. the lecture is about education and creativity in the schools. Ken says that creativity is important as education.but now schools education system now kills the creativity in the students. the reason is that they convince them to study the subjects that they don't want by telling them they will get a good job in the future. i totally agree with Ken because teacher in the school do this. everyday the teacher keep saying to the students to keep focusing on particular subjects because it will get you a good job. as a result, the students will think that if they practice what they are creative in they will not get a job.
