Today each of you briefly introduced yourselves to the class. Now I
would like you to tell us some more about yourself in writing.
Here are some questions to consider:
Where
are you in life (meaning, what stage)? Did you finish high school?
College? Graduate school? Talk about your background, and your
professional and personal aspirations. Also, discuss your interests,
hobbies, and talents. Feel free to add anything else that you would
like to share about yourself with the class.
You should post your writing as a comment to this post. Just click on comment.
This is writing PRACTICE. It does not have to be perfect.
Hi all,
ReplyDeleteI’m “Victorious Vero” no Victoria, so I can’t offer you any coupon or discount in the stores… But I can share with you some activities. I like so much to go to the theater and see movies (almost all kind of movies except horror, war, and ninja). I really love to eat, and this worries me a lot because I freak out of gain weight. By the way, I can taste and try different kind of food which means we can meet in a good restaurant and enjoy eating and talking together. I’m 21 + tax, so I can also drink. I rather liquors such as wine or rum instead others.
As you already know, I’m Latin, so I love to dance. My favorite rhythms are salsa, meringue, and bachata. Therefore, going to dance could be another plan for the group.
I used to lead my own space in one of the nationwide TV Channels in Venezuela, and I produced and presented my program. It appears every day at morning and noon during the news time. It was a 5 minutes capsule about medical advances and being healthy. That’s why one of my future goals is continue doing my job by taking part on one of the TV Channels here in Houston.
Other passion for me is to read. I enjoy books, I’m able with letter, I’m so creative, and I want to build my own stories. I applied for the Linguistic program In the UH because I want to learn different tools that let me become in a writer.
I think with this information and what I gave you in today’s presentation, you have a general idea on me. I just forgot to say you I work on Campus in the Publishing Company of the UH, Arte Público Press. This is an editorial company that produces books for different targets. I have been working for them since January, and I like the job so much because I learn a lot every day.
I hope we can bear a part in nice moments during our last semester in LCC.
Saludos
Wow, Victoria... I am VERY IMPRESSED with all you have written here. I think it would be fun if you could show us your tv program, even though it's in Spanish.
DeleteAlso, I think it would be great if you organized some activities for the class (for both 5A and 6A, and of course, if anyone else would like to come). Maybe you can select a restaurant or a place to go dancing and invite everyone. You can announce it in class, and of course, place it on the blog. I'd love to join you.
Tell me, have you been reading novels in English? I'd like to read a novel with the class to develop vocabulary and build reading fluency, but I haven't selected one yet. I'm up for some suggestions.
I think its great that you're working with the publishing company on campus. That is really excellent experience that you're gaining and it can help you find a job in your field here.
Finally, is it the linguistic department you want or the creative writing department (UH has an amazing creative writing department, actually)? I look forward to reading your writing, and to having you in the class in general this term.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI am “Intelligent Ileana” I come from Mexico City, a huge and precious city with a lot of great food to eat and places to go, so whenever you want to go I could host and guide you.
In my professional life it is hard to determine in which stage I am, now that I came to Houston. In Mexico, I was studying my master and it was difficult to leave it but sometimes you have to give priorities to your personal life; so I am here, leaving a different life with my husband, and starting with a new stage of changes and adaptation. I am really happy with him and since the last year we have been waiting for a great moment to have our own child, so we are still waiting for the moment to come.
You all know that I was making my master, but you didn´t know that I graduated from collage as a learning and language therapist. For the past 6 years I have been working with children with special needs of different ages and socioeconomic levels, attending children with autism, language and learning disabilities. I really enjoy working with them, so this is one of my passions in life!!
The second one is eating and partying, I love going out with my friends and eating at good restaurants, so I have to control myself in order to maintain my weight, but sometimes I break my diet and just let me enjoy different kinds of food and drinks. Whenever I go to a different place, I need to try something new and different. I had eaten ants´ eggs, frogs, armadillo, squirrel, guinea pig and snake.
The third one is traveling; I save almost all my money in order to travel. I think that it is an experience that make you grow fast and easy.
The last one is reading, I like to read novels from contemporary authors, so if you know any author in your country that writes pretty well, I would appreciate the recommendation.
So this is pretty much who I am, and my passions in life.
Thanks for reading.
Ileana,
DeleteThis is all great stuff that you've written. I really look forward to getting to know you this semester. I know how special you are by the fact that you work with "special needs" children; also by the fact that you want to experience as much as you can in life.
Before I was married, I used to save all my money for traveling too. I still love to travel and I have a very adventurous spirit :)

Hi Eiman,
DeleteYou sound like a wonderful woman and I'm so happy that you're in the class. If I have any physical problems, I will consult with you first! I'm so happy to hear that you are enjoying marriage and motherhood and I'm so sorry to hear that you're homesick for your friends and family.
I'm not clear on why you couldn't get a job. Did you mean here or back home? I think in the US you might need a Master's degree to work as a PT.
My name is Chanpol, or you can call me “Bank”. I came from Thailand and got the bachelor’s degree in computer engineering there. I came to the US in order to pursue the master’s degree in Technology Project Management. I have been waiting for the acceptance letter since I submitted all of my documents 3 weeks ago.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I have spent most of my time with a computer, I like to make a new friend and communicate with people. Therefore, if any of you wants to share some ideas or talk with me personally, I am really appreciated to do so. Furthermore, I like to play many kinds of sports, such as swimming, badminton, and basketball. Sometimes I go to the UH gym with my friends, but sometimes, I go there alone. Again, if you want to have some exercise at the recreation center and do not want to go alone, do not hesitate to call me.
Finally, in this semester, I hope that we will have a great time together as well as success.
Thank you for your time.
Bank,
DeleteThanks for sharing this with us. I hope you will make a lot of new friends this term, and I hope your classmates will take you up on your offer to go to the rec center with you.
hello,
ReplyDeletemy name is Mohammad,am 18 years old.I am from UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, specifically from Dubai.I graduated from high school last year. My main hobby is playing soccer. Also, i like food very much and i eat different types of food. I decided to come to the USA and enter a university as a undergraduate student to get a bachelor degree in electronics engineering. But when i came to the states i didn't have neither TOEFL nor IELTS the meet the requirements for any university and this was a problem for me. Therefore, i had to enter a language center. First i went to els language center and i stayed their for three months. then i decided to enter lcc and now i will enter the third month in it. When i finished level 5 i did the IELTS test and finally i got the score that i wanted from along time. I applied in different universities but tell now i only have one acceptance and it's in UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS - SAN ANTONIO.Finally,i hope we have a great semester together and wish you the best luck in achieving your goals.
thank you,
Mohammad,
DeleteUTSA is a very good school and San Antonio is a nice place to live (I've heard). I think that if you do well, you can transfer to UT-Austin, which is really a great place to be.
Congratulations on being accepted.
My name is Lin, I’m from Henan Province which is located in the middle of China. Henan has the largest population in China. I was born there and studied there before I came to Houston. I have been Houston since last September. This is my fourth semester studying in LCC.
ReplyDeleteI just finished high school, and then I came here and started to learn English. After I graduate level 6, I will go to UH and study accounting. I like to stay home and watch movies and TV series. I love spicy food, especially is hotpot.
There are 5 people in my family. My mom, dad, younger brother who is 9 years old, and I have an older sister. You must be surprised that many kids in my family. In China, it’s not allowed to have more than one child in one family. If the governments know have one child and you get pregnant, they will force you to take the child away. So when my mom was pregnant, she lived in an unfamiliar place where the people didn’t know her. After the baby was born, she just needed to pay for it.
In the future, I want to be a good accountant. I want to work in the top 100 accounting firms in the US.
Thanks for your reading!
Lin,
DeleteIt sounds like your mother is a very brave woman. Am I correct?
So do you plan to stay in the US and not go back to China?
I've already told you some of the basic facts about my life: I was born in New York, lived there for the first 12 years of my life after which my family moved to South Florida; I went to college in New Jersey and then graduate school here in Houston (at Rice); while I was a graduate student, I met my husband, and as they say, "the rest is history."
ReplyDeleteActually, there is more. I have 3 sons, ages 13 (almost 14), 11, and 9 (almost 10). My life mostly revolves around them. They're very ACTIVE. Common words from my mouth are "No ball in the house" and "Get off him!"
You also know that I didn't originally plan to teach ESL. I was getting my PhD in American literature at Rice when one of my professors suggested that I take the course to teach ESL--just to have another option in case my original plan didn't work out. Boy am I happy that I took her advice because teaching ESL has turned out to be great for me: I enjoy the work and the people so much AND the hours are great for me as a mother.
Someone asked me if I like to cook. The answer is no. On that note, I challenge any of you to come to my house and cook for my family and see how much you enjoy cooking! Your passion for cooking will quickly fade, I assure you.
Let me tell you something that you don't know about me. Before I was an English major in college, I was an accounting major. And boy am I happy that I failed "intermediate accounting II" because had I been successful in that course, I would be preparing your taxes rather than teaching you English!
In my free time, I like to swim, ride my bike, and read. My favorite thing to do is LAUGH. I love humor. If you make me laugh, I'll give you extra points on every test :)
Hi my name is shay. I came from shanghai china. I was born in 1991 and I came here almost one year ago. I want to apply for supply chain management in university of Houston as an undergraduate in future. Actually I have graduated from high school about three years ago and also graduated from college major in advertisement about two years ago. With time pass by, that area is not like what I expected. That is why I changed my major and start my new journey in supply chain. I think I am ready for my new life. In my free time, I am interested in body modification. In traditional Chinese cultural, they do not understand why I hurt my body like that, even my parents shocked by my behaviors. It took me seven years for me to prove that it is not because of my hot head, it's more like a belief to me. Except that, I am fond of productions. I almost get all series of them. It is like a collection. By the way, Steve Jobs is my idol and "think different" is my life principle. I really enjoyed my life in LCC so far.
ReplyDeleteHi Shay,
DeleteYou'll have to tell us some more about your fascination with body modification.
Also, what is supply chain management? It's been many years since I was a student in the business school so I'm not sure what that is exactly.
I'm glad to hear that you have been enjoying the LCC. Actually, its a very special place.
Hi, my name is Yo. As you all know, I'm from Thailand. I completed my bachelor degree in computer science 2 years ago. Now, I'm applying for graduate school in UH. About my hobbies, I like to watching movies, listening to musics, reading(sometimes) and playing sports. About myself, I'm kind of funny guy, enjoy with life. Anyway, glad to be in this class and hope that we will learn many things from each other. Wish you guy all the best and have great semester...
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to have you back in my class, Yo. I look forward to another fun semester with you.
DeleteHi everyone,
ReplyDeleteI'm Chune, Chuncharaporn Sinsiri. Nice to meet you all in an interesting class. I have been a faculty member in School of Nursing, Thammasat University in Thailand since 1997 after I got my Master degre in Community Health Nursing from Mahidol University, Thailand. I need to complete my PhD study at the School of Nursing, the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, UTHealth, as soon as possible as I can, since my colleagues and my beloved family are waiting for me.
I enjoy jogging with many runners in the morning at the Reice University in the weekend. The good environment which has fresh air, beautiful view and interesting people, at Rice field is a wonderful place to boost myself for the next week!
I look forward to having a great time through this fall semester. The common goal " master in English " which need uncommon practice is the reason why I am here.
Chune,
DeleteI'm sure that you are going to add a lot of interesting knowledge to our class.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI am "haha:D ha kyoung" You can call me "ha kyoung" or "kyoung"
I am from South Korea and I am 19 years old. I graduated high school this year on Feburary and I came to houston on May in order to study my favorite language English.
I'd like to talk about my hobby that I didn't mention in class. I like reading books these days. I don't really know about literature but I do enjoy reading. Especially novels. I accept any recommendations from you guys:) and as you know, I want to major in chemical engineering in order to earn a lot of money. I have interests in every fields so it's hard to choose only one. So I choose chemical engineering to my major just in case I find my true dream in future then I can support it by myself.
I am doing voluntary work every Tuesday and Friday to help elementary school students who are Korean to read and understand books. I teach two 9-year-old boys. They are so cute :)
I am homestaying with American family(aka host family) and they're really nice people. I feel really comfortable living here as much as living with my real family. Both of them always support me to do what I want to do. Also, my host family support me to experience diverse things. Like, they often take me to different kind of restaurants or cook different foods and I spent Independence day on the boat that they have, which was so impressive.
Anyways.. I hope we can spend this semester enjoying our class. Thanks for reading.
Kyoung,
DeleteYour life here seems very full. I think its awesome that you're volunteering to help kids. You are welcome to come volunteer at my house with my kids too!
I'm glad your homestay situation is working out well. That's great that they have a boat. I wish I could have such a homestay situation!
Tell me, are you reading novels in English? I think we have enough people to make a reading club!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Fatimah Altuhaifa. I came from Saudi Arabia from city which was considered as an agricultural city in the past and now days
are well known with the petroleum. I have done with the Bachelors degree in computer science in one of Suaid's universitys.
I struggled in the university because of the lack of the transportation. for that I spent around eight years of my life to do my Bachelors degree and until the last moment one of the last final exam I had not car
to go to the university to do this exam. for that I am happy with the transportation her even if it takes long time
and I am happy to be kind of people who stay a long with the problem and do not give up. about my happy one of my interesting is reading.
I used to read as I was child. When I was 9 most of my reading was stories and comic.
In 13 years old I used to read about animals then I turned to read everything even what I do not like.
In the university period I stop reading about any thing except computer.
coming here is a big challenge because In Saudi Arabia the only place I go to was school and I am not accustomed to do things alone and by my self but now I have to be independent.I volunteered once to teach children and I really really bad I am not good in saying stop so they could collapse the building and I would not say to them any thing. so If you see any class room has an earthquake be sure the teacher is I.
Hi everyone, my name is Luisa Paz. I'm new here and I'm from Maracaibo, Venezuela. I'm a Petroleum Engineer and I just finished a Master in the Gas Engineering area before I've got here. I worked for 2 years in PDVSA as a Reservoir Engineer and then I worked for 1 year in Occidental Consultants as a Project Engineer. I love my Country and my born city, it's really sad that we're passing trough political problems that has closed many opportunities for young professionals as I am. But at the moment, we're hoping that everything changes very soon =)
ReplyDeleteI'm not completely sure about my plans at the moment, because the really thing I wanna do is find a job on my professional area and start raising a family, being a support for my parents and sisters, but maybe I can take a PhD too, so..for now, I'm trying to really improve my english because I'm sure I would need it whether my plan is gonna be. Definitely my bigger weakness is my speaking because I don't think in english yet, so I need to translate first and I forget the words that I already know..it's kind of a mess! but I really hope improve all my english skills this semester.
I love kids!! When I wasn't working in my country, I used to take care of my nephews (two boys, 5-2 years old) every afternoon after school, feeding them, helping with their homework, bathing them and of course, playing with them..they made me really really happy!! that's why I'm looking for a part time job in the Child Care Center =p
Hi, everyone:
ReplyDeleteI’m Joe from China. “Jo-Jo”, is the game for me, which has been used by some of my friends. Repeating a simple syllable maybe helps you to remember me. I have graduated from high school and prepare to start my college life at UH.
I have tried various actions as my own hobbies; however, none of them can be it. Actually, I don’t have specific hobbies although it had been for a few period of time. If I have to choose one as my hobby, lying down at some places would be my first choice. The reason why I choose that is the super comfortable emotion at moment. Imaging a small hell covered by green grass, you lie down under the shadow of trees. Feeling a faint breeze, you just relax and stop your mind for a while. What a great thing it is.
Talent? I don’t recognize I have it because I just a normal human among 60 million people and haven’t achieve the top of any sections. Nevertheless, I try lots of things. For instance, I play basketball, soccer, ping-pang and so on. Gym is my close friend, so I have date with her one each week. I don’t know it’s frequently or not, but it must be a fantastic thing if we meet there by chance.
In short, simple, normal is the biggest character and doing nothing is the best expect thing I want. Anyway, it’s nice to meet you at 6A what I feel proud of. Best wish to you.
P.S. I am so sorry to post it later. It disappeal from my mind at the weekend...XD
